Description

Bostik 2402 + Hardener is a two-component, cold-curing polychloroprene contact adhesive for inflatable-boat construction, maintenance and repair. It bonds Hypalon, several rubber types, rigid PVC, wood, metal and leather, producing strong, resilient bonds with good resistance to water, heat, humidity and environmental exposure. It is not recommended for plasticised PVC.

Bostik 2402 Adhesive is a solvent-borne formulation based on polychloroprene rubber and resin. It is mixed with Bostikure D Curing Agent, also referred to as the hardener, to create a two-part adhesive system suitable for demanding marine and industrial bonding applications.

The adhesive is particularly suitable for constructing and repairing inflatable products, including Hypalon inflatable boats. Its cured bond remains resilient rather than rigid, helping it accommodate movement and flexing between compatible materials.

What Is Bostik 2402 Used For?

Bostik 2402 is designed for bonding compatible flexible and rigid substrates, including:

  • Hypalon rubber
  • Natural rubber
  • Polychloroprene rubber
  • Nitrile rubber
  • Butyl rubber
  • Polyurethane rubber
  • Rigid PVC
  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Leather
  • Decorative laminated plastics

It is suitable for inflatable-product construction and repair, general marine bonding, rubber fabrication and other applications requiring a flexible, water-resistant bond.

Is Bostik 2402 Suitable for PVC Inflatable Boats?

Bostik 2402 must not be described as suitable for every type of PVC inflatable boat.

The manufacturer specifies compatibility with rigid PVC, but expressly states that the adhesive is not recommended for plasticised PVC. Plasticiser migration can soften or weaken the adhesive bond.

Confirm the exact boat or patch material before use. Where substrate compatibility is uncertain, carry out a small adhesion test before completing the repair.

Key Features

  • Two-component, cold-curing adhesive system
  • Polychloroprene rubber and resin formulation
  • Creates strong, flexible and resilient bonds
  • Particularly suitable for Hypalon inflatable products
  • Bonds several rubber types, rigid PVC, metal, wood and leather
  • Good resistance to water, heat and humidity
  • Good resistance to UV and environmental exposure
  • Approximate temperature resistance from -40°C to +90°C
  • Approximate coverage of 4m² per litre, equivalent to 2m² of finished bonded area
  • Normal curing time of approximately 48 hours
  • Maximum bond strength develops within approximately seven days

How Is Bostik 2402 Mixed?

Mix Bostik 2402 Adhesive with Bostikure D Curing Agent in the proportions supplied.

When measuring separately, use the following ratio by weight:

100 parts Bostik 2402 Adhesive to 6 parts Bostikure D Curing Agent.

Mix thoroughly for approximately five minutes before application.

The mixed adhesive has an approximate pot life of six to eight hours when kept in a closed container. Pot life will be shorter in an open container because of solvent evaporation.

How to Apply Bostik 2402 Adhesive

  1. Ensure both bonding surfaces are dry, clean and free from oil, grease and contamination.
  2. Where appropriate, clean the surfaces with Bostik Cleaner/Thinner M501.
  3. Abrade compatible rubber, PVC or metal surfaces using clean emery cloth.
  4. Remove all abrasion dust with a clean cloth lightly moistened with Bostik Cleaner/Thinner M501.
  5. Mix the adhesive and curing agent thoroughly for approximately five minutes.
  6. Apply an even coat of mixed adhesive to both mating surfaces using a brush, roller coater or serrated trowel.
  7. Allow the adhesive to dry for approximately 10 to 20 minutes, or until it can be touched with the knuckles without transferring adhesive.
  8. Bring the surfaces together carefully without trapping air.
  9. Apply as much even pressure as possible across the complete bonded area.

Two thin coats are recommended for maximum adhesion. Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 20 to 30 minutes before applying the second coat. Allow the final coat to dry for 10 to 20 minutes before joining the components.

What Are the Working and Curing Times?

  • Tack life: Approximately 20 to 30 minutes
  • Pot life: Approximately 6 to 8 hours in a closed container
  • Normal curing time: Approximately 48 hours
  • Maximum bond strength: Develops within approximately 7 days
  • Accelerated cure: Approximately 2 hours at 70°C

Bonded components may normally be handled within minutes, but this initial handling strength must not be treated as a complete cure.

Bonding Metal Surfaces

For the strongest adhesion to metal, use Bostik 9252 Primer.

Apply an even, thin coat of primer to the correctly prepared metal surface and allow it to dry for at least one hour before applying Bostik 2402 Adhesive.

Important Use and Safety Information

Bostik 2402 Adhesive, the curing agent and the uncured mixed adhesive must not be contaminated with water or water vapour. Moisture contamination can reduce bond strength.

Bostik Cleaner/Thinner M501 can be used for surface cleaning, adhesive dilution, removal of excess adhesive and cleaning application equipment. Test it before use because it may attack painted surfaces.

Bostik 2402 is a highly flammable, solvent-borne product. Use it with suitable ventilation and follow the current product label and Safety Data Sheet. Store in a dry, flameproof area between 5°C and 25°C.
