Description

Bostik MSR CA is a one-component, permanently elastic, fast-curing SMP construction adhesive for bonding and sealing in yacht and boat building. It is designed for deck fittings, deck coverings, deck-to-hull connections, hatches, portholes, bollards and marine bedding applications. Available in White, Brown or Black as a 290ml cartridge or 600ml sausage.

Bostik MSR Construction Adhesive, also identified as Bostik MSR CA, is a moisture-curing adhesive based on Silyl Modified Polymer technology.

The product combines adhesive strength with permanent elasticity, allowing bonded assemblies to accommodate movement and vibration. It is intended for marine construction, assembly and sealing applications where adhesion, flexibility and weather resistance are required.

The manufacturer identifies three principal benefits:

  • Multipurpose marine bonding and sealing
  • Excellent adhesion
  • Easy tooling

What Is Bostik MSR CA Used For?

Typical applications specified by Bostik include:

  • Bonding push borders
  • Bonding and sealing deck fittings
  • Bonding deck coverings
  • Bonding and sealing deck-to-hull connections
  • Bonding deck hatches
  • Bonding portholes
  • Bonding and sealing bollards
  • Use as a bedding compound where high initial strength is required

Key Features

  • One-component construction adhesive
  • Silyl Modified Polymer formulation
  • Permanently elastic after curing
  • Fast-curing, moisture-reactive system
  • Excellent UV and weather resistance
  • Excellent ageing properties
  • Good resistance to fresh water
  • Good resistance to salt water
  • Can be sanded after curing
  • Compatible with most industrial paint and lacquer systems
  • Available in White, Grey or Black
  • Suitable for application using a hand-operated or pneumatic gun

How Is Bostik MSR CA Applied?

Bostik MSR CA can be extruded using a hand-operated or air-pressure gun.

For gun application, Bostik specifies an application temperature between approximately +5°C and +35°C. The separate technical-data table gives an overall application-temperature range of +5°C to +40°C.

For bonding applications:

  1. Ensure that each substrate is clean, dry and free from dust and grease.
  2. Apply the adhesive using a suitable hand or pneumatic gun.
  3. Maintain a minimum adhesive thickness of approximately 2mm.
  4. Assemble the substrates within approximately 15 minutes at 23°C and 50% relative humidity.

For sealing applications:

  1. Apply a continuous bead to the prepared joint.
  2. Tool or smooth the adhesive within approximately 10 minutes at 23°C and 50% relative humidity.
  3. Use a spatula or putty knife for tooling.
  4. The tool may be occasionally moistened with a soap solution.
  5. Do not allow soap solution to penetrate between the adhesive and the joint surface because this can cause loss of adhesion.

Does Bostik MSR CA Require a Primer?

Bostik MSR CA adheres without primer to most correctly prepared substrates. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust and grease.

Because substrate materials, coatings and manufacturing processes vary, Bostik recommends completing an adhesion test before use.

Bostik MSR CA does not adhere to untreated:

  • Polyethylene
  • Polypropylene
  • PTFE/Teflon

Where high adhesion is required because of substantial thermal loading, physical loading or wet operating conditions, Bostik recommends using Bostik Prep CS or Bostik Prep M (TF).

For plain untreated wood and other porous substrates, Bostik recommends Bostik Prep P.

Working and Curing Data

  • Skin-forming time: Approximately 10 minutes
  • Bonding assembly time: Within approximately 15 minutes
  • Sealing tooling time: Within approximately 10 minutes
  • Minimum adhesive thickness: Approximately 2mm
  • Curing mechanism: Atmospheric moisture
  • Shore A hardness: Approximately 55
  • Specific gravity: Approximately 1.5g/ml

  • Shear stress: Approximately 2.5MPa
  • Shore A hardness: Approximately 55
  • Volume change: Less than approximately 3%

Tensile performance is tested using ISO 37 dumbbell specimens. Shear stress is tested according to ISO 4587.

Temperature, UV and Water Resistance

Bostik MSR CA has a stated temperature-resistance range of approximately -40°C to +110°C.

The +110°C result is qualified in the data sheet as ten cycles consisting of seven hours at 110°C followed by 17 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity.

  • Excellent UV resistance
  • Excellent weather resistance
  • Excellent ageing properties
  • Good resistance to fresh water
  • Good resistance to salt water

Can Bostik MSR CA Be Painted?

Bostik MSR CA is compatible with most industrial paint and lacquer systems, including alkyd-resin and dispersion-based coatings.

Because industrial paint formulations vary, Bostik recommends completing a compatibility test before painting and consulting the paint supplier where necessary.

The adhesive can be sanded after it has fully cured.

Cleaning Uncured Adhesive

Tools and uncured adhesive residue can be cleaned using a clean, colourless cloth wetted with:

  • Bostik Liquid 1
  • Bostik Cleaner E

Cleaning should be completed before the adhesive cures.

Marine Fire and Structural-Glazing Certification

Bostik MSR Construction Adhesive has been tested and certified to the International Maritime Organization Fire Test Procedures for surface flammability, following FTP 2010 requirements. It has also been approved for flooring applications.

The data sheet states that product quality is regularly audited by Bureau Veritas.

It also lists certification to DNV-GL structural-glazing procedures and approval as a Class A and Class B adhesive for specified applications including:

  • Insulating glass
  • Single-pane safety glass
  • Seat-fastening rails
  • Door frames
  • Single-pane polymer glass
  • Wind breakers

Storage Life

Store Bostik MSR CA in its original, unopened container in a dry place between +5°C and +30°C.
