Description

Hempel Hempaspeed TF 77222 is a hard, biocide-free thin-film coating for glass fibre, steel and aluminium boats. It forms an ultra-smooth surface that minimises growth and drag in fresh or salt water. Apply it only over Hempel’s Conversion Primer 45441, using at least two coats or three coats for best performance. Cleaning may still be necessary in high-fouling areas.

Hempel Hempaspeed TF 77222 is a hard, biocide-free thin-film coating developed to protect underwater hull surfaces without using conventional antifouling biocides. Its ultra-smooth finish helps minimise marine growth and reduce hydrodynamic drag, making it suitable for pleasure boats, powerboats and racing or regatta vessels.

The coating combines a robust acrylic film with Hempel’s hydrogel technology. This creates a smooth, low-adhesion surface that makes fouling easier to remove while retaining the durability associated with a hard thin-film coating. Hempel also lists easy cleaning and no run-off contamination among the product’s principal features.

Suitable for properly prepared glass fibre, steel and aluminium, Hempaspeed TF can be used in both fresh and salt water. It is suitable for boats used on lakes, rivers and coastal waters, although cleaning may be required during the season in areas with high fouling pressure.

Hempaspeed TF must only be applied over Hempel’s Conversion Primer 45441. Apply at least two coats by brush or roller, or three coats for best performance. Professional airless spray application is also supported. The theoretical spreading rate is 11m² per litre at a recommended dry film thickness of 40 microns. Allow at least 24 hours at 20°C before immersion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hempel Hempaspeed TF 77222 used for?
It is used as a hard, biocide-free underwater coating for pleasure boats, powerboats and racing or regatta boats. It creates an ultra-smooth surface that helps minimise fouling growth and hydrodynamic drag.

How does Hempaspeed TF work without biocides?
Hempel combines hydrogel technology with a robust acrylic film to create a smooth, low-adhesion surface. Marine growth can still occur, but it does not adhere as firmly and is easier to remove.

Does it completely prevent marine growth?
No. It is designed to minimise growth and make the surface easier to clean rather than eliminate all fouling. Cleaning may be necessary in areas with high fouling pressure.

What hull materials can it be applied to?
It is suitable for properly prepared glass fibre, steel and aluminium hulls. It must be applied as part of the correct Hempel primer system.

Can it be used on aluminium boats?
Yes. The aluminium must be correctly prepared and primed, and Hempaspeed TF must be applied over Hempel’s Conversion Primer 45441.

Can it be used in fresh and salt water?
Yes. Hempaspeed TF is suitable for fresh water and salt water, including lakes, rivers and coastal marine environments.

Can it be applied over conventional antifouling?
Yes, provided the existing coating is correctly prepared and Hempel’s Conversion Primer is applied before Hempaspeed TF.

How many coats should be applied?
Apply a minimum of two coats. Hempel recommends three coats for best performance.

How much area does it cover?
The theoretical spreading rate is 11m² per litre per coat. A 750ml tin covers approximately 8.25m² for one coat or 4.1m² for two coats before application losses.

Which thinner should be used?
Use Hempel’s Thinner 808, product code 08081, or Hempel’s Thinner 08080 when required. Maximum thinning is 5%.

How long should it dry before launching?
Allow at least 24 hours at 20°C before immersion. The maximum permitted period before immersion is three months.
