Description

Hempel’s Pre-Clean 67602 is a high-strength, waterborne cleaner and degreaser for gelcoat, painted and varnished marine surfaces. It removes fuel residue, oil, grease, wax and silicone before painting or as part of a deep-cleaning programme. The concentrated product is supplied in a 1-litre bottle and diluted at 1:20 for application.

Pre-Clean removes contaminants that can interfere with subsequent surface preparation and coating application. It creates a clean foundation before sanding, filling, priming or repainting, but it does not replace any mechanical preparation or primer required by the selected Hempel coating system.

Dilute the product at the 1:20 ratio specified in the Product Data Sheet and apply it by brush. Hempel’s preparation guidance states that an intact paint coating can be washed and degreased with Pre-Clean. After cleaning, wash the surface thoroughly with fresh water and allow it to dry before continuing with preparation or painting.

Pre-Clean is a detergent and surface cleaner, not a paint remover. It is suitable for removing contamination from sound coatings but is not designed to strip existing paint, varnish or antifouling. Hempel does not specifically list bilge cleaning in the current Product Data Sheet.

Safety: Hempel’s Pre-Clean is classified as causing serious eye damage. Wear eye or face protection, use chemical-resistant gloves where contact is possible, provide adequate ventilation and prevent the product or contaminated rinse water from entering drains or watercourses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hempel’s Pre-Clean 67602 used for?
It is used to clean and degrease gelcoat, painted and varnished surfaces before painting or during deep-cleaning maintenance. It removes fuel, oil, grease, wax and silicone contamination.

Which surfaces can Hempel’s Pre-Clean be used on?
Hempel specifies gelcoat, painted and varnished surfaces. Any existing paint or varnish should be intact and suitable for cleaning before the product is applied.

Is Hempel’s Pre-Clean a paint stripper?
No. It is a waterborne detergent and surface cleaner. It removes contaminants rather than dissolving the underlying paint or varnish coating.

Does it remove wax and silicone before painting?
Yes. Hempel specifically lists wax and silicone among the contaminants Pre-Clean is formulated to remove.

How should Hempel’s Pre-Clean be diluted?
The current Product Data Sheet specifies a dilution ratio of 1:20. Follow the product label and documentation supplied with the current batch.

How is Hempel’s Pre-Clean applied?
Apply the diluted product by brush, work it over the contaminated area and then clean the surface thoroughly with fresh water.

Does the surface need to be rinsed after cleaning?
Yes. Clean the surface thoroughly with fresh water and allow it to dry before continuing with preparation or painting.

Can Hempel’s Pre-Clean be used on painted surfaces?
Yes. An intact paint coating can be washed and degreased with Pre-Clean. Damaged, loose or incompatible coatings may require separate preparation or removal.

Can Hempel’s Pre-Clean be used for bilge cleaning?
The current Product Data Sheet does not specifically list bilges. Any use in a bilge or enclosed compartment should account for substrate compatibility, ventilation, drainage and containment of contaminated rinse water.

Does Pre-Clean replace sanding or priming?
No. It removes contamination but does not replace abrasion, repairs, filling or priming required by the subsequent coating system.

Will Hempel’s Pre-Clean extend the lifespan of a coating?
Removing contamination supports correct surface preparation, but Hempel does not publish a specific or guaranteed increase in coating service life for this cleaner.

How much area does one litre cover?
Hempel does not publish a fixed square-metre coverage rate. Usage depends on the surface area, contamination level, cleaning method and whether repeat treatment is required.

What safety equipment should be worn?
Wear eye or face protection because the product is classified as causing serious eye damage. Chemical-resistant gloves should be worn where contact or soiling may occur.

How should Hempel’s Pre-Clean be stored?
Store it tightly closed in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area away from heat and ignition sources. For UK storage, do not store below 5°C.
