Description

Hempel’s Thinner 808 (No. 3) 08081 is a solvent thinner and tool cleaner for Hempel antifoulings, selected one-component topcoats during spray application, and Hempel’s Non-Slip Deck Coating. Use it only when the relevant coating Product Data Sheet specifies 08081, and do not exceed the stated thinning ratio.

Hempel’s Thinner 808 adjusts the consistency of compatible coatings where thinning is required for application. A small quantity can improve paint flow, assist distribution and reduce the risk of dry spray, particularly when a coating is being sprayed onto a relatively warm surface. It can also be used to clean suitable brushes, rollers, paint pads and spray equipment after application.

Hempel coatings are normally formulated for application after thorough mixing without automatically adding thinner. First mix the paint at approximately 20°C and test the application. Where the viscosity remains too high and the coating data sheet permits thinning, add the thinner gradually and keep the quantity to the specified minimum.

Excessive thinning reduces film build and may increase the risk of sagging. For paint below 10°C, warming the paint to approximately 20°C is preferred to adding extra thinner.

Important compatibility note: Thinner 808 does not perform the same function with every product in this list. Depending on the individual Product Data Sheet, it may be specified as an application thinner, a spray thinner, a tool cleaner or a combination of these.

  • Hempel’s Non-Slip Deck Coating: Thinner 808 08081 is specified as both the thinner and cleaner. Maximum thinning is 5%.
  • Hempel’s Multicoat: the current UK Product Data Sheet lists Thinner 811 08111 and Thinner 808 08081. Normal topcoat thinning is limited to 5%, while the first coat used as a primer may be thinned by up to 10% with a specified Hempel thinner.
  • Hempel’s Tiger Xtra and Hempel’s Hard Racing: current Product Data Sheets specify Thinner 08080 for paint thinning and list Thinner 808 08081 as a tool cleaner.
  • Hempel’s Classic: the supplied product information specifies Thinner 08080 for thinning and identifies Thinner 808 08081 as a tool cleaner.
  • Hempel’s Brilliant Gloss: the current UK Product Data Sheet specifies Thinner 811 08111 for standard thinning and cleaning. Contact Hempel for spray-application information.

For Hempel’s Cruising Performer, Hard Racing Boottop and Bilge & Locker Paint, confirm the precise role of Thinner 808 against the current Product Data Sheet supplied with the coating before use.

Application and Use Guidance

  • Check the coating container and current Product Data Sheet to confirm that Hempel’s Thinner 808 08081 is specified.
  • Thoroughly stir the paint before deciding whether thinning is required.
  • Bring cold paint towards the recommended application temperature.
  • Try the paint without thinner first.
  • Where thinning is authorised and necessary, add Hempel’s Thinner 808 gradually.
  • Mix thoroughly after each addition.
  • Do not exceed the maximum percentage stated for the coating and application method.
  • Keep thinning to the minimum required for acceptable flow or spray performance.
  • Compensate for reduced volume solids and film build where instructed by the coating specification.
  • Use Thinner 808 to clean compatible application tools before the paint has dried.
  • Use suitable personal protective equipment and maintain adequate ventilation.
  • Follow the product label and the current Safety Data Sheets for the thinner and coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hempel’s Thinner 808 08081 used for?
It is used as a thinner and tool cleaner for compatible Hempel antifoulings, as a spray thinner and tool cleaner for selected one-component topcoats, and as a thinner and cleaner for Hempel’s Non-Slip Deck Coating.

Is Hempel’s Thinner 808 suitable for every Hempel paint?
No. Only use it where the current Product Data Sheet for the coating specifies Thinner 808 08081.

Can Hempel’s Thinner 808 be used with antifouling?
Yes, but the precise role varies. Some antifouling data sheets specify 08081 as a tool cleaner while identifying Thinner 08080 as the application thinner.

Can it be used to thin Hempel’s Classic?
The supplied Hempel Classic information specifies Hempel’s Thinner 08080 as the application thinner and Thinner 808 08081 as a tool cleaner.

Can it be used with Hempel’s Non-Slip Deck Coating?
Yes. The current Product Data Sheet specifies Thinner 808 08081 as both the thinner and cleaner. Maximum thinning is 5%.

Can Hempel’s Thinner 808 be used with Hempel’s Multicoat?
Yes. The current Multicoat Product Data Sheet lists Thinner 808 08081 alongside Thinner 811 08111. Follow the maximum percentage stated for the intended application.

Can it be used with Hempel’s Brilliant Gloss?
Do not assume that 08081 is the standard thinner. The current UK Product Data Sheet specifies Thinner 811 08111 for normal thinning and cleaning and directs users to contact Hempel for spray information.

How much Hempel’s Thinner 808 should be added?
There is no universal dilution ratio. Follow the maximum stated for the coating and application method in the current Product Data Sheet.

Should thinner be added before mixing the paint?
No. Thoroughly mix the coating and test the application first. Add thinner gradually only where required and permitted.

Should Thinner 808 be used when paint is cold?
Cold paint should normally be warmed towards approximately 20°C rather than corrected by excessive thinning.

Can it help prevent dry spray?
A small permitted quantity can keep the coating open for longer and may reduce dry spray on relatively warm surfaces.

Why should thinning be kept to a minimum?
Adding thinner reduces the resulting volume-solids content and film build. Excessive thinning may also increase sagging and require additional coats.

Can Hempel’s Thinner 808 clean application tools?
Yes. It is a tool cleaner for compatible Hempel antifoulings, selected one-component topcoats and Hempel’s Non-Slip Deck Coating.

Can it be used as a general surface degreaser?
Hempel identifies Thinner 808 as a paint thinner and tool cleaner, not as a general surface preparation cleaner or degreaser.

What safety precautions apply?
Use suitable personal protective equipment, maintain adequate ventilation, observe the product label and consult the current Safety Data Sheet before use.
