How Does the H1 Planetary Steering Helm Work?
The Multiflex H1 uses a planetary gear mechanism. Multiple gears rotate around the helm’s central axis, distributing steering torque through several internal contact points rather than applying the load through a single gear.
This design:
- Distributes steering torque across the internal gear mechanism
- Provides a compact helm housing
- Supports smooth rotary movement
- Reduces backlash within the helm mechanism
- Provides lower feedback than a basic single-gear helm
- Transfers steering-wheel rotation to the SC-16 cable
- Retains direct mechanical steering control
When the steering wheel is turned, the H1 draws the SC-16 cable’s helical inner member through the helm. The cable converts this rotary input into linear push-pull movement at the engine, rudder or sterndrive steering connection.
The H1 is not a non-reaction or no-feedback helm. Some engine or rudder torque can still be transmitted back through the steering wheel. The Multiflex H1N is the separate model intended for applications requiring a non-reaction mechanism.
Which Boats and Engines Is the Kit Intended For?
The MS1 kit is intended for correctly specified single-station mechanical steering installations including:
- Compatible single-outboard powerboats
- Compatible inboard steering installations
- Compatible power-assisted sterndrive installations
- RIBs
- Leisure boats
- Fishing boats
- Work boats
- Boats requiring a planetary rotary steering helm
- Installations using a single SC-16 mechanical steering cable
- Dashboards requiring a 90° black bezel
- Compatible systems with an engine rating up to 150HP
The 150HP figure is a maximum system application, not universal confirmation that the kit fits every 150HP engine. Final suitability depends on:
- The boat manufacturer’s maximum horsepower rating
- Engine type and steering geometry
- Boat speed
- Engine steering torque
- Steering-cable route
- Required cable length
- Engine-side connection
- Steering-wheel diameter
- Ratings of every component in the installed system
The installation must remain within the rating of the lowest-rated component.
Can the H1 Be Used with Power-Assisted Steering?
Yes. The H1 may form part of a correctly specified power-assisted sterndrive mechanical steering system.
The H1 does not itself provide hydraulic or electric power assistance. It remains a mechanical helm and must be connected to a compatible SC-16 cable and an approved power-assisted steering arrangement.
Do not use it with an unsupported power-assist system or assume compatibility solely from engine horsepower.
Is the Steering Wheel Included?
No. The steering wheel is not included in this kit.
The H1 uses a standard 19mm / 3/4in tapered steering-wheel shaft. A compatible marine steering wheel must be ordered separately.
- Maximum steering-wheel diameter: 406mm / 16in
- Helm-shaft length: 127.5mm
- Shaft material: Galvanised steel
- Shaft profile: Standard 19mm / 3/4in taper
- Woodruff key, washer and retaining nut: Included
- Steering wheel and centre cap: Not included
Check the clearance around the dashboard, instruments, throttle controls and windscreen before selecting a steering wheel.
Steering-System Performance
- Maximum published application: Compatible systems up to 150HP
- Steering-wheel movement: Approximately 4.3 turns lock-to-lock
- SC-16 cable travel: 228mm / 9in
- Minimum cable bend radius: 203mm / 8in
- Maximum working load at tiller end: 5,000N / 500kg
- Maximum steering-wheel diameter: 406mm / 16in
- Helm-shaft length: 127.5mm
- Steering-wheel shaft: Standard 19mm / 3/4in taper
- Number of steering cables: One
- Number of steering stations: One
- Dashboard installation angle: 90°
- Helm mounting positions: Five selectable positions at 45° intervals
- Published operating ambient temperature: -20°C to +60°C

Some Multiflex fact-sheet values are rounded to approximately four turns, 230mm travel, a 200mm bend radius, a 400mm wheel and a 125mm shaft. The installation manual publishes the more precise values shown above.
What Are the Features of the SC-16 Steering Cable?
- Mechanical push-pull steering cable
- Direct connection to the Multiflex H1 helm
- Helical inner member at the helm end
- Grooved helm-end fitting retained by a flange bolt

- 203mm / 8in minimum bend radius
- Maximum published tiller-end working load of 5,000N / 500kg
- Available in nominal one-foot length increments
- Part-number format SC-16-XX
- Exceeds ISO 8848 and ISO 9775
- Designed for marine steering applications
- Suitable for the Multiflex MS1 system
The final two digits in the cable part number identify its nominal length in feet. For example, SC-16-12 denotes a nominal 12ft cable.
Does the SC-16 Cable Need an Adaptor?
No separate adaptor is required between the included Multiflex H1 helm and SC-16 cable.
The SC-16 helical inner member is inserted into the H1 helm and drawn into the planetary gear mechanism by rotating the steering wheel. The grooved cable fitting is then retained using the supplied flange bolt.
Multiflex cross-references the SC-16 cable family to:
- SeaStar Solutions / Teleflex SSC62
- Ultraflex M66
Multiflex cross-references the H1 helm to:
- Ultraflex T71FC
The B1B bezel is cross-referenced to:
- SeaStar Solutions / Dometic SB27484P
- Ultraflex X34
These cross-references are selection guides rather than universal direct-fit guarantees. Confirm the connector, retaining arrangement, travel, cable length, engine-side fitting and dashboard dimensions before substituting another brand.
How Do You Select the Correct SC-16 Cable Length?
Measure dimensions A, B and C along the proposed cable route in centimetres. Also count the number of 90° bends and identify whether the cable will pass through the engine tilt tube or use a separate transom or splashwell support.
For installation through an engine tilt tube:
- 1. Add dimensions A + B + C.
- 2. Subtract 10cm for each 90° bend.
- 3. Add 30.5cm for the engine tilt-tube installation.
- 4. Divide the result by 30.5 to convert the measurement to feet.
- 5. Round up to the next whole-foot cable length.
Formula: A + B + C − 10cm per 90° bend + 30.5cm.
For transom-support or splashwell mounting:
- 1. Add dimensions A + B + C.
- 2. Subtract 10cm for each 90° bend.
- 3. Divide the result by 30.5 to convert it to feet.
- 4. Round up to the next whole-foot cable length.
Formula: A + B + C − 10cm per 90° bend.
For replacement installations, check the model and length marking printed on the removed steering cable. Do not order a cable shorter than the calculated length.
