What Is the Multiflex K13 Used For?

The K13 combines the mechanical control cables from two stations so that either station can operate one engine-control circuit.

It can form part of a correctly specified:

  • Main-cabin and flybridge control installation
  • Dual-station throttle-control circuit
  • Dual-station gear-shift circuit
  • Dual-station reverse-gear circuit
  • Single-engine dual-station system
  • Twin-engine dual-station system
  • New mechanical control installation
  • Replacement of an existing K13 selector
  • Compatible universal 3300 cable installation

The application drawing uses the word clutch for the gear or reverse-control circuit. This is separate from the throttle circuit.

The K13 does not electronically select a station. Movement from either remote control is transferred through the mechanical slider assembly to the relevant engine or gearbox control.

What Is Included?

  • 1 x Multiflex K13 / K-13 Twin Station Control Connector

The installation manual identifies the following parts or mechanisms within the assembly:

  • Plastic cap
  • Plastic base plate
  • Slider mechanism
  • Sliding rods
  • Cable clamp
  • Cable connection kit
  • Retaining screws

The manual does not provide a complete retail packaging schedule or separately confirm the quantity and material of every fastener.

Not included unless expressly stated:

  • First-station throttle cable
  • Second-station throttle cable
  • First-station shift cable
  • Second-station shift cable
  • Additional engine control cables
  • Main-station control lever

Which Control Cables Are Compatible?

The current Multiflex K13 product page states that the connector is suitable for universal 3300-series Multiflex cables.

The page does not separately list individual cable models, conduit diameters, travel or cable-end thread.

Current Multiflex universal 3300 cable families include products such as:

  • EC-033: 90mm travel, 7mm conduit and 10-32 UNF end thread
  • EC-133: 90mm travel, 8.4mm conduit and 10-32 UNF end thread
  • EC-133R: 90mm travel, 7mm red conduit and 10-32 UNF end thread
  • EEC-133: 90mm travel, 8.6mm EDGE conduit and 10-32 UNF end thread

These cable specifications confirm their universal 3300 format, but the K13 product page does not name each variant individually. Confirm the conduit-cap fit, threaded-rod connection, clamp geometry and travel before installation.

Is the EC-033 Compatible?

The EC-033 is a Multiflex universal 3300 control cable with 90mm travel, a 7mm conduit, a 1.9mm stainless-steel solid-wire inner and a 10-32 UNF end thread.

The K13 is officially described for universal 3300-series Multiflex cables, but the K13 page does not name EC-033 individually. Confirm that both EC-033 conduit ends and threaded rods fit the K13 assembly before installation.

Is the EC-133 Compatible?

The EC-133 is a Multiflex universal 3300 control cable with 90mm travel, an 8.4mm conduit, a 1.9mm stainless-steel solid-wire inner and a 10-32 UNF end thread.

Its universal 3300 format matches the K13’s stated cable category. Complete fitment should still be checked at the conduit cap, slider thread, clamp and engine linkage.

Is the EC-133R Compatible?

The EC-133R is also listed by Multiflex as a universal 3300 cable and has 90mm travel, a 7mm red conduit, a 1.9mm stainless-steel solid-wire inner and a 10-32 UNF end thread.

The K13 product page does not separately identify the R-suffix cable. Confirm physical fit before installation.

Is the EEC-133 EDGE Cable Compatible?

The EEC-133 is a universal 3300 EDGE cable with 90mm travel, an 8.6mm EDGE conduit, a 2.75mm coated inner and a 10-32 UNF end thread.

The K13 page broadly states universal 3300-series Multiflex compatibility but does not name EEC-133. Because its conduit diameter and construction differ from EC-033 and EC-133, confirm that the K13 clamp and conduit-retaining arrangement fit correctly.

Does One K13 Control Both Throttle and Shift?

No. One K13 connects the two station cables for one control circuit.

The Multiflex application drawing shows one K13 for the throttle circuit and one K13 for the clutch or shift circuit.

How Many K13 Units Are Required?

Single engine, two stations, throttle only:

  • 1 x K13

Single engine, two stations, shift only:

  • 1 x K13

Single engine, two stations, throttle and shift:

  • 2 x K13
  • One for throttle
  • One for clutch or shift

Twin engines, two stations, throttle and shift:

  • 4 x K13
  • One throttle selector for the port engine
  • One shift selector for the port engine
  • One throttle selector for the starboard engine
  • One shift selector for the starboard engine

How Does the K13 Work?

  1. Remove the two screws from the plastic cap on the cable-mounting side.
  2. Remove the plastic base plate.
  3. Remove the slider mechanism.
  4. Screw the end rod of the first control cable into the slider.
  5. Remove the clamp from the slider mechanism.
  6. Fit the second control cable to the clamp.
  7. Reinstall the slider mechanism onto the sliding rods.
  8. Refit the base plate.
  9. Secure the conduit cap of the first cable in the base-plate and plastic-cap slot using the specified screw.
  10. Screw the end rod of the second cable into the supplied connection kit.

The final arrangement allows movement from either station to act through the slider and operate the connected throttle or shift linkage.

What Does the K13 Resistance Warning Mean?

The Multiflex manual states that selector operation depends on the difference between the resistance of the remote control levers and their cables and the resistance of the engine reverse-gear linkage.

Correct operation occurs when each remote control provides greater resistance than the engine reverse-gear lever.

Where the resistance relationship is incorrect, operating one station can move the control lever at the other station rather than moving the engine or gearbox lever.

After installation, operate the system repeatedly from both stations. If the unused control is dragged, increase the lever braking or hold the dragged lever in neutral using an external method.

Does the K13 Have a Manual Station Switch?

No electrical or manually operated station-selection switch is shown in the K13 product information.

The K13 is a passive mechanical connector. Selection occurs through operation of either connected remote-control station and depends on correct cable rigging and control resistance.

What Position Should the Controls Be in When Changing Stations?

The current K13 product page and manual reviewed do not publish a separate station-transfer sentence equivalent to the idle-and-neutral instruction stated on the Ultraflex L23 page.

Both stations must be correctly rigged and tested so that their idle, neutral, forward, reverse and full-throttle positions correspond. Follow the instructions supplied with the remote controls, engine, gearbox and control cables when transferring operation between stations.

Is the Ultraflex L23 a Direct Equivalent to the Multiflex K13?

The Ultraflex L23 / 31649B is the closest documented functional equivalent.

The two products share:

  • Mechanical dual-station cable operation
  • Connection of two control stations
  • One selector per control function
  • Throttle-selector capability
  • Shift-selector capability
  • Sliding cable-transfer arrangement
  • Passive operation without electrical power
  • Dependence on suitable control-lever resistance
  • Requirement for testing from both stations

No formal manufacturer cross-reference has been verified. Treat the products as functional equivalents rather than automatically interchangeable replacements.

Can Ultraflex L23 Specifications Be Applied to the K13?

No. Do not apply the L23 part number, engine-application statement, control-box compatibility, cable interface, overall dimensions, guide spacing, cable-centre spacing, slider travel, mounting positions, fastener sizes or material composition to the K13 without confirmation.

Is the K13 Suitable for Single Engines?

Yes. The Multiflex manual shows a single-engine, two-station application using two remote control heads, one K13 for throttle and one K13 for clutch or shift.

Is the K13 Suitable for Twin Engines?

The Multiflex manual shows a twin-engine, two-station arrangement with separate port and starboard control circuits, one throttle selector per engine and one clutch or shift selector per engine.

Four K13 units are shown in total.

Does the K13 Control Steering?

No. The K13 is an engine control cable accessory for throttle and shift circuits. It does not replace a mechanical steering helm, steering cable, hydraulic helm, hydraulic cylinder, steering tie bar, steering station selector or autopilot interface.

Does the K13 Require Electrical Power?

No electrical power supply, wiring harness, switch, solenoid or electronic actuator is identified in the K13 product page or installation manual. The connector operates mechanically through the movement of the two control cables.

What Are the K13 Dimensions?

The current Multiflex product page and installation manual reviewed do not publish:

  • Overall length
  • Extended overall length
  • Overall width
  • Overall height
  • Sliding-rod diameter
  • Sliding-rod spacing
  • Cable-centre spacing
  • Clamp dimensions
  • Connection-kit dimensions
  • Mounting-hole positions
  • Slider travel
  • Product weight

Do not use Ultraflex L23 dimensions for the K13 without direct physical measurement.

What Materials Are Used?

The Multiflex installation manual explicitly identifies a plastic cap and plastic base plate.

The manufacturer information reviewed does not publish the material or grade of the slider mechanism, sliding rods, cable clamp, connection kit, retaining screws, retaining nuts or other internal components.

Is the Cable Thread Published?

The current K13 product page does not state a thread size.

Current Multiflex universal 3300 control cables such as EC-033, EC-133, EC-133R and EEC-133 use 10-32 UNF threaded ends. The K13 interface thread should still be confirmed directly rather than assigning the cable-thread specification to every selector component.

Is a Maximum Working Load Published?

No maximum push load, pull load, proof load or fatigue rating is published for the K13 in the sources reviewed.

Selection and installation must account for the control-cable load rating, throttle or gearbox operating force, control-head friction, cable travel, bend radius, cable length, slider alignment and lowest-rated system component.
