Description
The Rule Rule-Mate automatic bilge pump range combines a submersible centrifugal pump and integral water-level sensor in one unit, so a separate float switch is not required. This combined listing covers selected 500, 800, 1100, 1500 and 2000 GPH models in 12V or 24V DC; choose the exact model and voltage from the variant selector.
Rule-Mate pumps are designed to remove normal nuisance water from the bilge of an intact boat. The integral sensor starts and stops the pump automatically, while a debris back-up programme prevents continuous running if the sensor is fouled or the pump becomes air-bound.

- Product category: Automatic submersible marine bilge pump
- Model numbers: RM500B, RM500B-24, RM800B, RM800B-24, RM1100B, RM1500A, RM2000A and RM2000A-24
- Nominal capacities: 500 to 2000 GPH (1,893 to 7,571 LPH)
- Supply options: 12V DC or 24V DC, model dependent
- Automatic control: Integral water-level sensor with 2.5-minute debris back-up mode
- Application: Fresh-water or salt-water bilge pumping on intact boats
What Is the Rule Rule-Mate Automatic Bilge Pump Used For?
The Rule-Mate is used to remove normal accumulations of bilge water caused by spray, rain, seepage, spillage and small amounts of water taken aboard during vessel movement. It is intended for a correctly designed marine bilge-pumping system and is not an emergency damage-control pump for flooding caused by hull failure.
What Is Included?
- One Rule Rule-Mate automatic submersible bilge pump in the selected model and voltage
- Integral electronic water-level sensor and automatic back-up programme
- Removable inlet strainer/base
- Rule-Mate check valve supplied for the selected pump model
What Is Not Included?
- Discharge hose, hose clamps, through-hull fitting, seacock or vented loop
- Control-panel switch, fuse holder, cable extensions or waterproof electrical connectors
- Installation fasteners and vessel-specific plumbing or electrical hardware
How Does the Automatic Sensor Work?
No separate float switch is required. On the 500, 800 and 1100 GPH models, the pump starts when water reaches approximately 50mm (2 inches) and stops at approximately 9mm (3/8 inch). On the 1500 and 2000 GPH models, it starts at approximately 70mm (2-3/4 inches) and stops at approximately 16mm (5/8 inch).
If debris fouls the sensor or the pump becomes air-bound, the Rule-Mate back-up programme stops continuous dry running and checks for water every 2.5 minutes. Normal level-sensing operation resumes after the obstruction is removed.
Which Rule-Mate Model Should I Choose?
- RM500B / RM500B-24: 500 GPH, 19mm hose, compact 12V or 24V option.
- RM800B / RM800B-24: 800 GPH, 19mm hose, higher nominal output in 12V or 24V.
- RM1100B: 1100 GPH, 12V, with 25mm or 29mm discharge connection.
- RM1500A: 1500 GPH, 12V, larger pump body for higher-capacity installations.
- RM2000A / RM2000A-24: 2000 GPH, 25mm or 29mm hose, available here in 12V or 24V.
Match the pump voltage to the vessel electrical system and confirm the fuse, cable size, discharge hose, available mounting space and expected discharge head before ordering. Nominal GPH is an open-flow rating; actual output falls as hose length, vertical lift, bends and restrictions increase.
Key Features
- Integrated pump and automatic water-level sensor
- No separate float switch required
- Debris back-up mode checks for water every 2.5 minutes if the sensor is fouled

- Quick-release inlet strainer for inspection and cleaning
- Threaded discharge for installation and maintenance
- 500, 800 and 1100 GPH models include back-flow reduction and hidden air vents to help reduce air locking
- Ignition-protected marine construction
- 12V and 24V variants available within the selected range
Installation and Selection Guidance
- Install the pump at the lowest practical point in the bilge where it remains accessible for cleaning and testing.
- Use flexible, smooth-bore marine hose of the diameter specified for the selected model.
- Keep the discharge run as short and direct as practical; minimise sharp bends and restrictions.
- Secure hose connections with corrosion-resistant marine hose clamps.
- Prevent siphoning with a correctly positioned discharge outlet, seacock and/or vented loop as required by the vessel installation.
- Use the stated fuse size and cable sized for the full positive-and-negative circuit length.
- Keep all electrical joints above the highest possible bilge-water level and seal them with marine-grade waterproof connections.
- Electrical installation should be completed by a competent marine electrician and follow the pump instructions and applicable marine electrical standards.
Maintenance and Safety
- Test automatic and manual operation at regular intervals.
- Remove debris from the strainer, sensor area and surrounding bilge.
- Inspect the hose, clamps, check valve and wiring for damage, corrosion or restriction.
- Use only for fresh water or salt water; do not pump fuel, oil, hazardous, caustic or corrosive liquids.
- Disconnect electrical power before servicing the pump.
- Do not rely on any bilge pump as the sole protection against flooding or hull damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Rule-Mate pump need a separate float switch?
No. The Rule-Mate has an integral water-level sensor that controls automatic starting and stopping.
Can the pump also be operated manually?
Yes. The pump wiring supports constant automatic power and a manual-override circuit when connected to a suitable Rule panel switch and installed in accordance with the manufacturer instructions.
What happens if the sensor becomes dirty?
The back-up programme prevents continuous run-on and changes to a 2.5-minute water-check cycle. Clean the sensor, strainer and bilge so normal level sensing can resume.
Is the quoted GPH the flow I will get after installation?
Not necessarily. The nominal GPH is an open-flow rating. Vertical lift, long hose runs, bends, small fittings, check valves and low supply voltage reduce delivered flow.
Can I fit a 24V pump to a 12V boat?
No. Select a pump that matches the vessel supply voltage. The voltage, fuse and current requirements are specific to each model.
Can this pump remove fuel or engine oil?
No. Rule specifies fresh water and salt water only. It is not intended for fuel, oil, hazardous, caustic or corrosive liquids.
Is this an emergency flooding pump?
No. It is designed for normal bilge water in an intact boat and must not be treated as damage-control equipment for hull failure.
