Description

The Standard Horizon GX1400GPS/E Fixed Mount VHF GPS Radio is an ultra-compact 25W marine transceiver with an integrated 66-channel GPS receiver, Class D DSC and a dedicated Channel 70 receiver. It provides DSC distress signalling, position sharing, automatic position polling, NMEA 0183 connectivity and ATIS support without requiring a separate GPS for normal DSC operation.

What is the Standard Horizon GX1400GPS/E used for?

The GX1400GPS/E is designed for permanent installation aboard sailing boats, motorboats, fishing vessels and other craft requiring fixed marine VHF communications. It provides selectable 25W or 1W transmission for communication with nearby vessels, marinas, harbour authorities and coast stations on permitted marine channels.

Its built-in GPS and Class D DSC system also support digital distress alerts, vessel identification, position requests, position reports and navigation to received DSC positions. The GX1400GPS/E is the European version and includes ATIS operation for compatible inland-waterway channel groups.

Does the built-in GPS simplify DSC installation?

Yes. The GX1400GPS/E has a 66-channel GPS receiver integrated into the front panel, so an external GPS or chartplotter connection is not normally required to provide the radio with position and time data.

Once a valid MMSI has been programmed and the GPS has acquired a position, the radio can include the vessel's identity, latitude, longitude and time in a DSC distress alert. GPS information is also used for position sharing, automatic position polling and basic navigation functions.

The receiver supports WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS and GAGAN satellite-based augmentation systems. Its specified sensitivity is better than -147dBm, with a typical first fix of approximately one minute from a cold start and five seconds from a hot start.

What Class D DSC functions does the GX1400GPS/E provide?

The European GX1400GPS/E meets ITU-R M.493-14 Class D DSC requirements. A separate receiver continuously monitors DSC Channel 70, allowing digital calls to be received while the main receiver is monitoring a voice channel.

Supported DSC functions include:

  • DSC distress alerts
  • Individual calls
  • Group calls
  • All-ships urgency and safety calls
  • Position requests
  • Position reports
  • DSC test calls
  • Automatic DSC channel selection
  • Automatic position polling for up to six vessels
  • Navigation to received DSC distress and position-report locations
  • Transmitted, distress and received-call logs

The radio can store up to 60 individual DSC contacts and 30 DSC groups. It also retains up to 30 transmitted calls, 30 received distress calls and 50 other received DSC calls. A valid MMSI must be programmed before the DSC functions can be used.

Automatic Position Polling

The GX1400GPS/E can automatically request and display the GPS positions of up to six compatible DSC-equipped vessels. This can be used to monitor boats travelling together or to check the reported position of another vessel stored in the DSC directory.

Polling requires the appropriate vessel MMSI details to be programmed and the other vessel to have compatible DSC equipment capable of responding to a position request.

Can the GX1400GPS/E connect to a chartplotter?

Yes. The radio provides NMEA 0183 input and output connections for compatible GPS chartplotters and navigation equipment. It supports standard NMEA 0183 at 4800 baud and NMEA 0183-HS at 38400 baud.

Compatible input sentences include:

  • GGA
  • GLL
  • GNS
  • RMC
  • GSA
  • GSV

Output sentences include:

  • DSC
  • DSE
  • GGA
  • GLL
  • GNS
  • RMC
  • GSA
  • GSV

The NMEA output can transfer the radio's internal GPS information and received DSC position data to compatible navigation equipment. This allows a received position report or distress location to be displayed on a connected chartplotter.

Display and Controls

The front panel uses a high-resolution full-dot matrix display with a visible area of approximately 55 × 31mm. It shows the selected channel, transmit power, GPS position, time, DSC information and menu settings.

Standard Horizon's E2O Easy to Operate icon and menu system organises radio, DSC, GPS, channel and setup functions into clearly identified categories. Programmable soft keys can be assigned to frequently used functions.

The supplied Clear Voice noise-cancelling microphone includes:

  • Channel up and down controls
  • Direct Channel 16/Sub-channel access
  • High and low transmit-power selection
  • Push-to-talk control

Up to 10 frequently used channels can be stored for direct recall using the preset function.

Scanning and Channel Monitoring

The GX1400GPS/E provides programmable memory scanning, priority scanning and Multi Watch operation. Multi Watch can be configured for Dual Watch or Triple Watch to monitor a working channel alongside the programmed priority and sub-channels.

The radio supports international and applicable regional marine channel groups according to its programming. ATIS mode is included for European inland-waterway use where required. An appropriate ATIS identification code and permitted channel group must be used in accordance with local regulations.

Transmit Power, Audio and Electrical Supply

The radio provides two selectable RF output levels:

  • 25W for long-range, line-of-sight marine communication
  • 1W for short-range communication and reduced interference

It operates from a nominal 13.8V DC negative-ground supply, with an allowable operating range of 11–16.5V DC. Current consumption is approximately 0.3A in standby, 1.2A while receiving at maximum audio output, 5A when transmitting at 25W and 1A when transmitting at 1W.

The receiver provides up to 4.5W audio output into a compatible 4Ω external speaker. Clear Voice noise reduction in the microphone helps reduce background wind and engine noise during outgoing transmissions.

Is the GX1400GPS/E waterproof?

Yes. The GX1400GPS/E is rated IPX8, equivalent to submersion in up to 1.5 metres of water for 30 minutes under the manufacturer's test conditions.

The die-cast chassis and waterproof construction are intended for exposed marine installations, although electrical connectors, cable entries and installation openings must still be correctly protected and sealed.

The radio is covered by Standard Horizon's three-year waterproof warranty, subject to the applicable regional warranty terms and normal-use conditions.

Mounting Options

The GX1400GPS/E measures approximately 156 × 61 × 100mm and weighs approximately 800g. It can be installed using the supplied adjustable mounting bracket or flush-mounted into a console or bulkhead using the optional MMB-84 flush-mount bracket.

The specified flush-mount space is approximately 131 × 50 × 120mm. Because the GPS receiver is integrated into the front section of the radio, the chosen position should permit adequate satellite reception. The optional SCU-38 external GPS antenna can be used where the installation position obstructs the internal receiver.

What is included with the GX1400GPS/E?

  • Standard Horizon GX1400GPS/E fixed VHF radio with attached microphone
  • Adjustable mounting bracket
  • Two mounting knobs and installation hardware
  • DC power cable with 6A fuse and fuse holder
  • Owner's manual
  • Warranty documentation

A DSC warning sticker is listed for applicable package versions. The optional MMB-84 bracket is required for flush mounting.
