Description

The Standard Horizon HX40E Handheld VHF Radio is an ultra-compact 6W marine transceiver with IPX7 submersible construction, 600mW internal audio, a high-resolution dot-matrix display and a built-in 7.4V, 1850mAh rechargeable battery. The HX40E floats when fitted inside the optional Standard Horizon SHC-29 flotation case.

What is the Standard Horizon HX40E used for?

The HX40E is designed for portable marine VHF communication between vessels, marinas, harbour authorities and shore stations on permitted marine channels. Its compact housing makes it suitable for carrying aboard sailing boats, motorboats, tenders and other small craft, or for use as a backup radio aboard a larger vessel.

A dedicated CH16/S control provides quick access to emergency Channel 16 or a programmed sub-channel. Up to 10 frequently used channels can also be stored and recalled using the preset key.

Does the HX40E float and is it waterproof?

The Standard Horizon HX40E is submersible to IPX7, equivalent to immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes.

The radio does not float by itself. Floating capability is provided only when the HX40E is correctly fitted inside the optional Standard Horizon SHC-29 flotation case.

The radio is backed by Standard Horizon's 3-year waterproof warranty, subject to the manufacturer's applicable warranty terms and normal-use conditions.

What transmit power and audio output does the HX40E provide?

The HX40E provides three selectable transmit power settings:

  • 6W for maximum permitted transmitting power
  • 2.5W for medium-range communication
  • 1W for short-range communication and reduced battery consumption

The internal speaker produces up to 600mW of audio output, helping received transmissions remain clear in wind, engine noise and other demanding marine environments.

Is the HX40E suitable for European marine channels?

Yes. The HX40E is the European version of the Standard Horizon HX40 marine VHF platform. It supports applicable marine channel groups and includes programmable ATIS operation for compatible European inland waterways.

An ATIS identification number must be obtained from the appropriate authority before the ATIS function is used. Available channels and permitted transmitting power depend on the radio's regional programming and applicable national regulations.

Ultra-Compact Case Design

The HX40E measures 52mm wide, 95mm high and 33mm deep, excluding the control knob and antenna. Its compact housing is approximately the size of a deck of playing cards, allowing it to fit easily into a pocket, lifejacket or grab bag.

Display and Controls

The high-resolution fully backlit dot-matrix display provides clear channel information in daylight and low-light conditions. The E2O Easy to Operate menu system simplifies access to radio settings and everyday functions.

  • CH16/S emergency key
  • Preset memory for up to 10 favourite channels
  • Memory scan
  • Dual Watch and Triple Watch
  • E2O Easy to Operate menu system
  • High-resolution backlit dot-matrix display

Battery and Charging

The HX40E is fitted with a built-in 7.4V, 1850mAh rechargeable battery designed to provide reliable operating time for everyday marine use. The battery is rechargeable using the supplied desktop charger and USB AC adaptor.

FM Broadcast Receiver and Weather Channels

The integrated FM broadcast receiver covers 65–108MHz, allowing onboard entertainment when the radio is not being used for marine communications.

NOAA Weather Channels and Weather Alert functions are supported where available within the programmed regional channel set.
