Description

Tecnoseal Alpha One Generation II sterndrive anode kits are complete six-anode replacement sets for Mercury/MerCruiser Alpha One Gen II drives. Zinc, aluminium and magnesium variants are available, with each kit containing matched alloy-specific anodes for the gimbal housing, anti-cavitation plate, bearing carrier, trim cylinders and trim tab. Fixing hardware is included.

Which Drive Is This Kit For?

Confirmed application: Mercury/MerCruiser Alpha One Generation II sterndrives manufactured from 1991 onwards, normally serial number 0D469829 and above.

This kit is not suitable for the earlier MR or Alpha One Generation I drive. Earlier Generation I drives, normally ending at serial number 0D469828, use the different Tecnoseal KITALPHAONEGEN1 configuration.

Always identify the drive generation and serial number before ordering. The model-year ranges overlap around 1991, so the serial number and existing anode arrangement provide the more reliable fitment check.

What Is Included?

Every alloy option contains six sacrificial anode pieces in the selected material:

  • 1 × gimbal-housing anode: 00806BIS zinc, 00806BISAL aluminium or 00806BISMG magnesium
  • 1 × anti-cavitation/driveshaft plate anode: 00814 zinc, 00814AL aluminium or 00814MG magnesium
  • 1 × bearing-carrier collar anode: 00819 zinc, 00819AL aluminium or 00819MG magnesium
  • 2 × trim-cylinder/lift-ram anodes: 00817 zinc, 00817AL aluminium or 00817MG magnesium
  • 1 × flat trim-tab anode: 00820 zinc, 00820AL aluminium or 00820MG magnesium
  • Fixing hardware: Included with every kit

All anodes supplied in a selected kit are manufactured from the same alloy. The kit does not contain mixed zinc, aluminium and magnesium components.

Which Anode Alloy Should I Choose?

  • Zinc: A conventional selection for boats operating in salt water.
  • Aluminium: A versatile lower-mass alternative generally used in salt or brackish water. Mercury also specifies aluminium Alpha One Gen II kits for fresh-water and salt-water applications.
  • Magnesium: Intended for fresh-water use. Magnesium is normally unsuitable for prolonged salt-water operation because it may be consumed too rapidly.

Use the alloy specified by Mercury, the vessel manufacturer or the existing cathodic-protection design. Keep all replacement anodes on the sterndrive consistent unless a qualified marine corrosion specialist specifies otherwise.

Water salinity, connected metals, shore-power arrangements, a MerCathode system and stray-current conditions can affect the correct alloy selection.

How Do I Confirm Compatibility?

Before ordering, check:

  • The drive is an Alpha One Generation II, not an MR or Alpha One Generation I.
  • The drive serial number is normally 0D469829 or later.
  • The existing installation uses the same six anode positions and shapes.
  • The selected alloy is appropriate for the operating water and existing cathodic-protection system.
  • The drive has not been modified with non-standard housings, trim components or anode positions.

Do not select the kit solely by engine horsepower, boat manufacturer or the words “Alpha One”.

Installation and Maintenance

Remove the existing anodes and clean each anode seat, fixing point and required electrical-contact surface to bare, clean metal. Corrosion products, paint, grease and sealant can interrupt the electrical connection required for sacrificial protection.

Install every component from the selected kit using the included serviceable hardware and the Mercury/MerCruiser tightening procedure. Confirm that each anode is secure and has direct electrical continuity with the component it protects.

Do not paint the sacrificial anodes or their required contact surfaces. Inspect them during scheduled servicing and replace them when substantially consumed, damaged or loose. Unusually rapid or uneven consumption can indicate incorrect alloy selection, poor continuity, bonding faults or stray-current activity.

Alloy Standards and Manufacture

Tecnoseal manufactures zinc, aluminium and magnesium sacrificial anodes at its foundry in Grosseto, Tuscany. Alloy composition is checked using spectrometric testing against the applicable material specification:

  • Zinc alloy: US Mil Spec A-18001K
  • Aluminium alloy: US Mil Spec A24779 SH
  • Magnesium alloy: US Mil Spec A21412 SH

Tecnoseal states that its anodes are designed and manufactured according to the chemical composition specified by the relevant US military alloy standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is fixing hardware included? Yes. Tecnoseal lists fixing hardware as included with the zinc, aluminium and magnesium kits.
  • Will this fit an Alpha One Generation I drive? No. Generation I uses the different KITALPHAONEGEN1 kit configuration.
  • How many anodes are included? Six sacrificial anode pieces are included: one gimbal anode, one anti-cavitation plate anode, one bearing-carrier anode, two trim-cylinder anodes and one trim-tab anode.
  • Are all the anodes made from the selected alloy? Yes. Selecting zinc, aluminium or magnesium provides an entire matched kit in that alloy.
  • Can zinc, aluminium and magnesium anodes be mixed on the drive? Use a consistent alloy strategy unless the drive manufacturer or a qualified corrosion specialist specifies otherwise.
  • Does the kit include every anode required for the boat? No. It covers the stated Alpha One Gen II sterndrive configuration. Separate hull, propeller, shaft, trim-tab or other equipment anodes may still be required.
  • Can the new anodes be painted? No. Keep sacrificial surfaces and electrical-contact faces free from paint, grease and sealant.
  • Why do the three kits have different weights? Zinc, aluminium and magnesium have different densities. The equivalent components therefore differ in weight even though they fit the same drive positions.
