Description

The Ultraflex S55 / 34744A Steering Cable Support is a corrosion-resistant 90° mounting bracket designed to secure one compatible mechanical steering cable in the correct position for connection to a boat’s rudder. Its articulated ball-and-flange assembly can be installed at either 51mm or 89mm above the mounting surface, allowing the cable height to be matched to the rudder linkage and installation geometry.

The standard S55 uses an aluminium support tube with stainless-steel flange components. The bracket mounts to a horizontal bulkhead or deck structure close to the rudder and uses a 64 x 64mm four-hole mounting pattern. The steering cable, rudder connection fitting and fasteners used to secure the bracket to the boat are supplied separately.

What Is the Ultraflex S55 Used For?

The S55 supports the stationary outer section of a compatible mechanical steering cable near the boat’s rudder.

When the steering wheel is turned:

  1. The steering helm moves the steering cable’s inner output member.
  2. The S55 holds the cable’s outer casing and support tube securely.
  3. The moving cable output travels in a push-pull direction.
  4. A separately selected clevis, link arm or rudder connection transfers the movement to the rudder.

The S55 can form part of a correctly specified:

  • Inboard mechanical steering system
  • Rudder steering installation
  • Horizontal-bulkhead cable support
  • Below-deck steering cable installation
  • Replacement of a compatible square cable-support bracket
  • Installation requiring a choice of two cable-support heights
  • Steering system where the cable must be aligned with a rudder tiller or quadrant

What Is Included?

  • 1 x threaded support tube
  • 1 x ring nut
  • 1 x articulated ball
  • 2 x mounting flanges
  • 1 x 90° square support bracket
  • 4 x M6 x 40mm screws
  • 4 x elastic washers
  • 4 x M6 nuts
  • 1 x drilling template

Not included unless expressly stated:

  • Mechanical steering cable
  • Steering helm
  • Steering wheel
  • Dashboard bezel
  • Rudder tiller arm
  • Steering cable clevis
  • Rudder connection pin or bolt
  • Engine steering link arm
  • Hydraulic steering components
  • Screws, washers and nuts used to secure the bracket to the boat
  • Additional structural reinforcement
  • Other installation-specific steering hardware

Does the S55 Hold One or Two Steering Cables?

The S55 supports one mechanical steering cable.

Dual mounting refers to two alternative cable-support positions:

  • 51mm / 2.01in above the mounting surface
  • 89mm / 3.50in above the mounting surface

Only one position is used in a normal installation. The S55 is not a twin-cable or dual-station steering bracket.

How Do the Two Mounting Heights Work?

The articulated tube and flange assembly can be fitted through either side opening in the square bracket.

Select the opening that provides the most suitable:

  • Cable height
  • Rudder tiller alignment
  • Cable approach angle
  • Below-deck clearance
  • Linkage movement
  • Steering cable travel

What Are the S55 Mounting Dimensions?

  • Mounting pattern: 64 x 64mm / approximately 2.52 x 2.52in
  • Number of fixing holes: 4
  • Fixing-hole diameter: 7mm / approximately 0.27in
  • Lower cable-support height: 51mm / approximately 2.01in
  • Upper cable-support height: 89mm / approximately 3.50in

The available manufacturer data do not state the bracket thickness, maximum mounting-surface thickness, articulation angle, product weight or maximum steering load.

What Are the S55 Tube Dimensions?

  • Supplier-published tube length: 270mm
  • Supplier-published tube outside diameter: 22mm

Some supplier catalogues state a 275mm tube length. The official installation manual does not publish the tube length, so check the physical product where the exact measurement is critical.

Which Steering Cables Are Compatible?

The official S55 manual does not publish a definitive cable-model compatibility list. A specialist supplier lists the S55 for compatible Ultraflex M58 and M66 steering cables.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Steering cable manufacturer and model
  • Cable retaining-nut thread
  • Cable output-end design
  • Cable travel and length
  • Minimum bend radius
  • Rudder tiller connection
  • Required clevis or linkage fitting
  • Complete steering-system rating

Is the S55 Intended for Rudder or Outboard Steering?

The S55 is primarily designed to position a mechanical steering cable for connection to a rudder. The official installation instructions show the cable attached to a rudder arm and the bracket mounted to a horizontal bulkhead.

Do not assume that the S55 is suitable for an outboard splashwell installation without checking the complete steering arrangement.

Is the S55 the Ultraflex Equivalent of the Multiflex S2?

The Ultraflex S55 is the closest functional counterpart to the Multiflex S2 used elsewhere in this project.

Both products use:

  • A raised 90° bracket
  • One articulated steering cable support tube
  • Two alternative cable-support positions
  • A square mounting pattern
  • A separate rudder or engine linkage fitting

Compare the mounting pattern, tube dimensions, cable thread, support heights and steering geometry before treating them as interchangeable.

How Does the S55 Differ From the S55SS?

Ultraflex S55 / 34744A

  • Complete 90° rudder steering cable support
  • Aluminium support tube
  • Stainless-steel flange components
  • Standard version

Ultraflex S55SS / 41553B

  • Complete 90° rudder steering cable support
  • Stainless-steel support tube
  • Stainless-steel flange construction
  • Stainless-tube alternative

Does the S55 Include a Rudder Clevis or Link Arm?

No. The S55 supports the steering cable but does not include the separate component that connects the moving cable output to the rudder.

A clevis, ball joint, eye end, threaded adaptor or rudder-specific linkage may be required.

Are the Boat-Mounting Fasteners Included?

No. The kit includes the M6 hardware used to assemble the flanges to the bracket. The fasteners used to secure the complete bracket to the boat are not included.

Can the S55 Be Used with Hydraulic Steering?

No. The S55 is a mechanical steering cable support and is not a hydraulic cylinder bracket, hydraulic tie bar or hydraulic hose fitting.

Is the S55 a Complete Steering System?

No. A complete mechanical rudder steering system may also require:

  • Steering wheel
  • Mechanical steering helm
  • Dashboard bezel
  • Correctly measured steering cable
  • S55 cable-support bracket
  • Rudder clevis or link arm
  • Rudder tiller
  • Structural backing plate
  • Suitable mounting hardware

  • Confirm the four 7mm fixing holes before drilling
  • Mount the bracket to a rigid horizontal structure
  • Install suitable backing or reinforcement where required
  • Use corrosion-resistant boat-mounting fasteners
  • Avoid excessive side loading on the cable
  • Confirm that the articulated ball moves freely
  • Turn the steering fully from port to starboard
  • Check that the cable completes its full travel without binding
  • Ensure the rudder linkage does not contact surrounding equipment
  • Recheck all fasteners after the initial test
  • Inspect the support regularly for corrosion, cracking or looseness
  • Do not operate the boat if the cable or S55 bracket binds

Marine steering is safety-critical. Installation should be completed according to the current Ultraflex, steering-cable and boat instructions by a competent marine technician.
