Description

The Ultraflex T73NRFC is a compact, single-cable mechanical rotary steering helm with a planetary gear design and patented non-reversible mechanism. It is designed for use with an Ultraflex M66 steering cable and provides approximately 3.8 steering-wheel turns lock-to-lock with a 228mm / 9in cable stroke. A compatible X34 90° or X35 20° bezel kit is required and sold separately.

Important: This product is the standalone T73NRFC helm. The bezel kit, steering cable, steering wheel and engine connection components are not included.

What Is This Steering Helm Used For?

The Ultraflex T73NRFC converts steering-wheel movement into push-pull travel through a single M66 mechanical steering cable. It is intended for compatible:

  • Outboard steering installations
  • Inboard mechanical steering installations
  • Non-power-assisted sterndrive installations
  • Boats with limited clearance behind the dashboard
  • Outboards and surfacing-propeller applications where a correctly specified single-cable system is suitable

The helm's central steering-shaft position produces a compact installation footprint. Its planetary gear mechanism distributes steering loads across three gear-contact points, helping balance the load and reduce wear compared with a conventional single-pinion rotary helm.

The T73NRFC must not be used with power-assisted steering systems.

How Does the Non-Reversible Mechanism Work?

The T73NRFC incorporates a patented non-reversible mechanism designed to prevent continuous propeller torque from loading the steering wheel.

When the operator releases the wheel, the mechanism locks the helm shaft and helps maintain the selected steering position. When the operator applies steering input, the mechanism disengages so the wheel can be turned.

This design is also described as non-reversible, anti-feedback, no-feedback or zero-torque steering. It eliminates the continuous torque load that would otherwise be transmitted back through the wheel. It does not mean that every steering force or mechanical sensation is completely removed.

What Is Included?

The standalone T73NRFC package is identified as containing:

  • One T73NRFC steering helm
  • One cable-retrieving bushing
  • One cable-retrieving or protection pipe
  • Two M6 cable-retaining screws

Not included:

  • X34 90° bezel kit
  • X35 20° bezel kit
  • M66 steering cable
  • Steering wheel
  • Engine connection kit
  • Engine link arm
  • Transom, splashwell or clamp-block mounting components
  • Other installation-specific hardware

Which Steering Cable Is Compatible?

The manufacturer-specified cable is the Ultraflex M66 heavy-duty mechanical steering cable.

The M66 cable is sold separately and must be selected in the correct length for the boat. The steering-cable stroke for the T73NRFC/M66 system is 228mm / 9in.

Can the Multiflex SC-16 Cable Be Used?

Multiflex cross-references its SC-16 steering cable to the Ultraflex M66 cable family.

The SC-16 should be treated as a cross-reference rather than an automatically approved substitute. Confirm the helm-end connection, cable-retaining recess, cable travel, engine-side fitting and warranty implications before mixing steering components from different manufacturers.

Which Cables Are Not Compatible?

  • Ultraflex M58
  • Multiflex SC-18
  • SeaStar Solutions / Teleflex SSC131
  • Multiflex Lite 55 steering cables
  • Rack-and-pinion steering cables
  • Hydraulic steering hoses or components

Which Bezel Kit Is Required?

The T73NRFC requires one of the following bezel and installation kits:

  • Ultraflex X34: 90° mounting bezel kit
  • Ultraflex X35: 20° mounting bezel kit

Both bezel kits are sold separately. The selected bezel determines the steering-wheel shaft angle relative to the dashboard.

Multiflex cross-references its B1B bezel to the Ultraflex X34 and its B2B bezel to the Ultraflex X35. Confirm mounting dimensions, supplied hardware and warranty implications before mixing brands.

Is a Bezel Included?

No. This listing is for the T73NRFC steering helm only.

A 90° X34 or 20° X35 bezel and installation kit must be selected and purchased separately.

Which Steering Wheels Are Compatible?

The T73NRFC has a standard 19mm / 3/4in tapered steering-wheel shaft.

It can accept compatible Ultraflex, Multiflex, Teleflex and other marine steering wheels provided that:

  • The wheel has a standard 3/4in tapered hub
  • The taper and keyway match the helm shaft
  • The wheel diameter does not exceed 406mm / 16in
  • The wheel clears the dashboard, controls and instruments
  • The selected bezel provides the required installation angle

What Multiflex Helm Cross-References to the T73NRFC?

Multiflex cross-references its H1N Planetary 150 Non-Reaction helm to the Ultraflex T73NRFC.

This is a selection reference rather than confirmation that every component is directly interchangeable. Compare the dashboard mounting, bezel, cable attachment, steering-wheel shaft, cable travel and installation hardware before substitution.

Steering Performance

  • Steering-wheel turns: Approximately 3.8 turns lock-to-lock
  • Steering-cable stroke: 228mm / 9in
  • Maximum steering-wheel diameter: 406mm / 16in
  • Steering-wheel shaft: Standard 19mm / 3/4in taper
  • Minimum steering-cable bend radius: 200mm / 7.9in
  • Number of steering cables: One
  • Feedback: Patented non-reversible anti-feedback system
  • Bezel options: 90° or 20°
  • Direct steering cable: Ultraflex M66

The stroke and minimum bend-radius figures describe the M66 cable and complete T73NRFC/M66 system rather than the standalone helm housing.

Construction and Design

  • Compact mechanical rotary helm
  • Planetary gear mechanism
  • Three satellite gears distribute steering load around the central gear
  • Patented non-reversible mechanism
  • Fast-connect cable installation
  • Central steering-shaft position
  • Corrosion-resistant helm materials
  • Standard 3/4in tapered steering-wheel shaft
  • Designed for limited dashboard clearance
  • Single-cable configuration
  • Compatible M66 cable has stainless steel output components

The stainless steel output-end specification applies to the compatible steering cable. The M66 cable is not included with this standalone helm.

Maximum Horsepower and Boat Application

The T73NRFC must not be installed on a boat with an engine that exceeds the boat manufacturer's maximum horsepower rating or the rating of any steering-system component.

The maximum permitted application is determined by the lowest-rated component in the complete steering system.

The supplied product data lists the following boat-length guidance:

  • Outboard installations: Maximum boat length of 9m
  • Inboard and non-power-assisted sterndrive installations: Maximum boat length of 10.5m

These figures should be confirmed against current Ultraflex application data for the specific boat.

High-Speed Application Note

Follow the current Ultraflex speed guidance supplied with the product. Published Ultraflex documents use different high-speed thresholds and may direct the installer to a dual-cable or hydraulic steering system for faster boats.

Standards and Compliance

  • European steering standard: Exceeds EN 28848
  • ABYC standard: Exceeds ABYC P17
  • Construction: Corrosion-resistant materials
  • Compatible cable output ends: Stainless steel
  • European marking: Components marked in accordance with Directive 2013/53/EU where applicable

Installation and Safety

  • Purchase the required X34 or X35 bezel kit before installation
  • Select the correct M66 steering-cable length
  • Do not use the helm with power-assisted steering
  • Do not disassemble the helm while installing the steering cable
  • Maintain a minimum cable bend radius of 200mm / 7.9in
  • Keep the cable away from sharp edges and heat sources
  • Prevent dirt from contacting the exposed cable end
  • Support the cable conduit along its route
  • Use a minimum 38mm / 1.5in bulkhead opening for the cable
  • Confirm that wheel rotation produces the correct steering direction
  • Test the system through its complete port-to-starboard travel
  • Do not exceed the rating of the boat or any steering-system component
  • Have the system installed by a competent marine technician
