What Is the Ultraflex T91 Used For?

The Ultraflex T91 converts steering-wheel rotation into movement of an Ultraflex M90 Mach mechanical steering cable. The cable transfers this movement to the compatible engine or rudder connection fitted at the opposite end of the steering system.

It is intended for:

  • New single-cable mechanical steering installations
  • Replacement of an existing Ultraflex T91 helm
  • High-efficiency mechanical steering systems
  • Installations requiring the increased flexibility of the M90 Mach cable
  • Long steering-cable routes
  • Cable routes where installation clearance is restricted
  • Compatible marine steering systems approved for the T91 and M90 combination
  • Complete Ultraflex FOURTECH-I steering packages

The T91 is the helm component only. It does not independently determine the maximum engine horsepower or boat speed permitted for the complete steering system.

The steering cable, engine connection, steering load, hull configuration and boat manufacturer's ratings must all be considered when specifying the installation.

Special-Order Availability and Lead Time

The Ultraflex T91 42647S is a non-stocked special-order product.

This means:

  • The helm is supplied to order
  • It is not available for immediate dispatch
  • A supplier lead time applies
  • The estimated delivery date can vary according to manufacturer and distributor availability
  • The current estimated lead time should be confirmed before the order is placed

Contact us before ordering so that the current supplier lead time can be checked.

The T91 helm is supplied separately from the M90 steering cable, mounting bezel, steering wheel and engine connection components. These additional parts may have different stock statuses and lead times.

The correct T91 helm should not be substituted with another helm solely because the alternative is available sooner. Compatibility with the existing cable and complete steering installation must be confirmed first.

How Does the Planetary Gear Design Work?

The T91 uses a planetary gear mechanism designed for high-efficiency mechanical steering applications.

The planetary arrangement provides:

  • Distribution of steering load through the helm mechanism
  • Compact installation behind the dashboard
  • A centrally positioned steering-wheel shaft
  • Approximately 4.2 steering-wheel turns lock to lock
  • Minimal steering feedback
  • Compatibility with the high-flexibility M90 Mach cable
  • Smooth mechanical transfer between the steering wheel and cable

The T91 provides minimal feedback, but it is not a zero-torque or non-reaction helm. The separate Ultraflex T93ZT uses a non-reversible zero-torque mechanism.

What Is Included?

The Ultraflex T91 is supplied with:

  • One Ultraflex T91 42647S planetary steering helm
  • Single-cable M90-compatible helm connection
  • Standard 19mm / 3/4in tapered steering-wheel shaft

Not included:

  • Ultraflex M90 Mach steering cable
  • Steering wheel
  • Dashboard mounting bezel
  • Engine connection kit
  • Outboard steering link arm
  • Steering-cable support
  • Splashwell or transom mounting bracket
  • Cable gaiter or protective boot
  • Complete FOURTECH-I steering package
  • Installation labour

A compatible M90 cable and mounting bezel are required to complete the helm installation.

Which Steering Cable Is Compatible?

The Ultraflex T91 is designed for the:

  • Ultraflex M90 Mach high-efficiency mechanical steering cable

The M90 Mach cable provides:

  • Patented fast-connect helm fitting
  • Increased flexibility for long or restricted cable routes
  • Stainless-steel engine-side output fitting
  • Patented engine-side sealing gasket
  • Corrosion-resistant construction
  • Minimal feedback
  • 150mm / 5.9in minimum bend radius
  • 200mm / 7.87in suggested bend radius

The complete T91/M90 system has a stated steering-cable stroke of 228mm / 9in.

The Ultraflex M66 is not the specified steering cable for the T91. Do not substitute an M66, Multiflex SC-16 or another cable without confirmation that the complete helm-and-cable combination is approved.

Which Mounting Bezel Is Required?

The T91 helm is supplied without a dashboard mounting bezel. Select the required bezel according to the steering-wheel angle and finish.

  • X34 / 36654B: Black bezel for 90° mounting
  • X34W / 40654C: White bezel for 90° mounting
  • X91 / 42850N: Chrome bezel for 90° mounting
  • X90 / 42646P: Chrome bezel for 90° mounting with lock device
  • X35 / 36655C: Black bezel for 20° mounting

The bezel determines the steering-wheel shaft angle relative to the dashboard.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Whether a 90° or 20° steering-wheel angle is required
  • The dashboard construction and thickness
  • Available clearance behind the dashboard
  • Clearance around instruments and controls
  • Clearance for the selected steering wheel
  • Compatibility of the mounting template with the T91 helm

Do not drill the dashboard using a template intended for a different helm or bezel.

Is There a Multiflex Equivalent to the Ultraflex T91?

There is no direct manufacturer-published Multiflex equivalent to the Ultraflex T91.

The closest functional Multiflex alternative is the:

  • Multiflex H1 Planetary 150 steering helm

The corresponding complete Multiflex package is the:

  • Multiflex MS1 mechanical steering system

The standard MS1 system includes:

  • Multiflex H1 planetary helm
  • Multiflex SC-16 steering cable
  • Multiflex B1B 90° mounting bezel

The Ultraflex T91 and Multiflex H1 share several general characteristics:

  • Single-cable mechanical steering
  • Planetary helm design
  • Compact dashboard installation
  • Standard 19mm / 3/4in tapered steering-wheel shaft
  • Separate steering cable and dashboard bezel
  • Compatibility with correctly specified marine steering installations

However, they are not direct equivalents or interchangeable helm components.

Why Is the Multiflex H1 Not a Direct T91 Replacement?

Multiflex's published cross-reference identifies:

  • Multiflex H1: Equivalent to Ultraflex T71FC
  • Multiflex SC-16: Equivalent to Ultraflex M66
  • Multiflex B1B: Equivalent to Ultraflex X34

The Multiflex cross-reference does not list the Ultraflex T91 or M90 Mach cable.

Ultraflex T91 system:

  • T91 planetary helm
  • M90 Mach high-efficiency cable
  • 150mm / 5.9in minimum cable bend radius
  • 200mm / 7.87in suggested cable bend radius
  • Approximately 4.2 turns lock to lock
  • Separate Ultraflex 90° or 20° bezel

Multiflex H1 / MS1 system:

  • H1 planetary helm
  • SC-16 steering cable
  • 203mm / 8in minimum cable bend radius
  • B1B 90° bezel in the standard MS1 package
  • Multiflex-specific cable and helm connection components

Replacing a T91 with a Multiflex H1 may require replacement of the steering helm, cable, dashboard bezel, cable-retention hardware, engine-side connection components and associated mounting components.

The Multiflex H1 or MS1 should therefore be described as the closest functional alternative, not as a direct bolt-in replacement.

Can the T91 Be Used with a Multiflex SC-16 Cable?

The Multiflex SC-16 should not be treated as a compatible T91 cable.

The SC-16 is officially cross-referenced to the Ultraflex M66 rather than the M90 Mach. The T91 is designed around the M90 cable and its fast-connect fitting.

Do not combine the T91 with an SC-16 solely because both are mechanical steering systems or their fittings appear visually similar.

For an existing T91 installation, use the specified Ultraflex M90 cable unless the complete steering system is being replaced.

How Is the T91 Different from the T71FC?

The T91 and T71FC are both single-cable Ultraflex mechanical steering helms, but they are designed around different primary steering-cable applications.

The T91 provides:

  • Planetary mechanical steering design
  • M90 Mach cable compatibility
  • Approximately 4.2 turns lock to lock
  • 228mm / 9in cable stroke
  • 150mm minimum cable bend radius
  • Increased suitability for long or restricted cable routes
  • Minimal steering feedback

The T71FC is a separate mechanical helm commonly associated with the standard M66 cable family. The Multiflex H1 is cross-referenced to the T71FC, not the T91.

How Is the T91 Different from the T93ZT?

The T91 and T93ZT share:

  • Planetary gear design
  • M90 Mach cable compatibility
  • Approximately 4.2 turns lock to lock
  • 228mm / 9in cable stroke
  • 406mm / 16in maximum steering-wheel diameter
  • 90° or 20° mounting options
  • Standard 3/4in tapered steering-wheel shaft

The principal difference is:

  • T91: Minimal-feedback steering helm
  • T93ZT: Zero-torque helm with a non-reversible mechanism

The T91 does not include the zero-torque mechanism used by the T93ZT.

Dimensions and Fitment

  • Steering-wheel shaft: 19mm / 3/4in tapered
  • Maximum steering-wheel diameter: 406mm / 16in
  • M90 steering-cable stroke: 228mm / 9in
  • Suggested cable bend radius: 200mm / 7.87in
  • Minimum cable bend radius: 150mm / 5.9in
  • Mounting angle: 90° or 20°
  • Cable configuration: One M90 steering cable
  • Dashboard bezel: Required separately

The selected bezel and its installation template determine the dashboard cut-out, mounting-hole positions, steering-wheel shaft angle and fastener positions.

Do not cut or drill the dashboard until the actual helm, bezel and installation template have been checked together.

Steering-Wheel Compatibility

The T91 has a standard 19mm / 3/4in tapered steering-wheel shaft.

It is compatible with suitable marine steering wheels where:

  • The wheel has a matching 3/4in tapered hub
  • The wheel diameter does not exceed 406mm / 16in
  • The hub seats correctly on the shaft taper
  • The shaft key engages fully
  • The retaining hardware can be fitted correctly
  • The wheel clears the dashboard, instruments and controls
  • The wheel can rotate through the complete steering range

The steering wheel is sold separately.

Engine and Boat Compatibility

The T91 must be installed only as part of a correctly specified mechanical steering system.

Before selection, confirm:

  • Boat type and hull configuration
  • Engine or rudder steering load
  • Maximum boat speed
  • Engine power
  • Number of engines
  • Required engine or rudder connection
  • M90 cable length
  • Complete cable route
  • Boat manufacturer's maximum engine rating
  • Ultraflex application guidance

The T91 must not be used where the engine exceeds the maximum horsepower rating of the boat.

Ultraflex recommends hydraulic steering for boats operating above approximately 50mph.

Construction and Design

  • Planetary mechanical gear design
  • Single-cable configuration
  • Designed for the M90 Mach cable
  • Fast-connect steering-cable installation
  • Compact behind-dashboard arrangement

  • Verify that all bends meet the permitted radius
  • Confirm the boat and engine remain within their ratings
  • Isolate the engine starting circuit

During installation:

  • Follow the instructions supplied with the helm and selected bezel
  • Do not disassemble or modify the helm
  • Keep dirt and foreign material away from the cable connection
  • Engage the M90 fast-connect fitting completely
  • Support the cable along its route
  • Keep the cable clear of sharp edges
  • Avoid heat, moving machinery and abrasion points
  • Do not kink or crush the cable
  • Do not bend the M90 cable more tightly than 150mm / 5.9in
  • Use the correct engine-side connection components

After installation:

  • Turn the steering wheel fully from port to starboard several times
  • Confirm approximately 4.2 turns lock to lock
  • Check that the engine or rudder reaches both steering limits
  • Confirm the steering direction corresponds with wheel rotation
  • Check that the cable does not bind
  • Check that the steering wheel clears instruments and controls
  • Verify engine tilt movement where applicable
  • Confirm the helm, bezel and cable fasteners remain secure
  • Inspect the engine-side connection
  • Check for abnormal stiffness, movement or free play

Do not operate the boat if the steering is stiff, damaged, incorrectly directed or unable to reach its complete travel.
